Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in employing video review systems.
Replay systems will be launched at Wimbledon this year.
Athletes are granted the option to challenge certain rulings made by the chair umpire, mirroring the system currently in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.
The new system will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.
This move follows just a year after the All England Club rolled out ELC, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line judges.
Reviewable Decisions
Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to review other situations, such as:
- Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
- Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.
Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the number of reviews a player can initiate.
Practical Application
An illustrative incident took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.
The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."
The umpire watched a video and ruled Draper was guilty of interference, granting the point to his opponent.
Broader Adoption
Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at every one of its events.
Further Updates
A further change at The Championships this year involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses situations where spectators have occasionally been unsure if a shot was in or out.
In other news, with precisely 100 days to go until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
