Britain and America have signed a major trade agreement that will keep zero import taxes on British medicine products entering the US market.

The Terms of the Pact

Under the terms of the agreement, the UK has committed to boost funding on medicines through the public health system. This commitment guarantees that duties on these vital exports will remain at nothing for a timeframe of the next three years.

This agreement comes after previous statements to hike duties on patented drug imports, with potential rates mentioned as high as double the cost.

"This deal with the UK reinforces the global environment for innovative medicines and brings much-needed equity to U.S.–U.K. pharmaceutical trade," a release said.

Trade Impact

Pharmaceuticals constitute one of the Britain's biggest export categories to the America, which is easily the biggest market for leading companies like GSK and AstraZeneca.

Trade data reveal that in the one-year period to the end of the third quarter, the UK shipped medicines valued at billions to the US. This value made up 17.4% of all goods exports in that span.

"This deal secures employment, boosts funding and facilitates the UK to emerge as a worldwide center for biotech and pharma," the Business and Trade Secretary commented.

Key NHS Changes

The agreement entails several key pledges from the British government:

  • Price Threshold Increase: The UK will increase the price threshold at which it deems new therapies to be unaffordable by twenty-five percent.
  • Increased NHS Spending: There is a aim to increase total public funding on treatments from 0.3% of Gross Domestic Product to 0.6% over the following ten-year period.
  • Rebate Cap: The amount drug companies must refund to the NHS to control costs will be capped at fifteen percent. In the past, refunds were more than 20%.

Broader Context

The pact takes place against a ongoing row between the sector and the British authorities over drug pricing and regulatory access.

This friction were exacerbated by claims that American patients were paying significantly more for the same drugs than people in the other developed nations.

In recent months, several significant drug company projects in the UK have been paused or scrapped, while multi-billion-dollar investments have been directed toward American operations.

A senior figure acknowledged that the NHS needed to spend more on medicines, noting that its expenditure on drugs had declined as a percentage of its overall budget over the past decade.
