Roughly 35,000 applicants could be compromised, cautions the United States embassy

A major data breach in Somalia's digital visa application system may have exposed private data pertaining to numerous thousands of individuals, involving American nationals, the United States diplomatic mission in the Somali nation has alerted.

Officials stated gathered trustworthy accounts that "anonymous digital intruders" compromised the Mogadishu administration's e-visa platform, potentially compromising information belonging to roughly 35,000 applicants.

The exposed records circulating online include personal identifiers, images, date of birth information, marital status, place of residence and email information, per a American diplomatic communication published on last Thursday.

"This security incident remains active and might reveal any sensitive details you enter into the system," the UK has also warned visitors.

"Consider the risks prior to requesting an electronic visa necessary for visiting the Somali nation."

Official Reaction

Somali authorities have not issued statements about the security compromise. However administration officials has transferred its visa service from the previous platform the initial application portal to the new system the new application website, without offering a public clarification.

"While Embassy Mogadishu is unable to confirm whether applicant details is included in the breach, travelers who have requested visas via the digital application platform may be affected," the US' statement stated.

Regional Implications

The revised application procedure necessitates every visitor, comprising individuals from the autonomous region of Somaliland and the self-governing territory of the northeastern region, to request travel visas via electronic platforms.

Opponents claim visitors have encountered supplementary costs in certain regions, amounting to repeated fees.

Regional Dynamics

Somaliland, which declared independence in the early nineties, governs itself via separate governmental bodies although it lacks worldwide acceptance. The Federal Government asserts that the area continues to belong to its sovereign territory.

The claimed security incident adds to persistent conflicts between central government and Somaliland administration over control of Somali airspace. While Mogadishu regained complete authority of national aviation space in 2017, Hargeisa administration regularly disputes this agreement.

Current Developments

The disagreement worsened recently after Hargeisa's chief executive Abdirahman Irro stated the northern territory would not accept Somalia's e-visa and directed that aviation companies need to acquire permission from Somaliland officials prior to accessing its airspace.

However major airlines have refused to accept travelers absent Somalia's e-visa approval.

Recently, the northern region's top diplomat Abdirahman Dahir Aadan reiterated that "every person entering Somaliland will obtain their visa at the point of entry", declaring Somalia's e-visa system lacked security and cautioning that "individual details might be obtained by radical elements" as a result of employing the platform.

Passenger Complications

The stand-off has caused some travellers traveling to Somaliland stranded at airports due to rejection at check-in because they didn't have the federal electronic visa.

Somaliland's Civil Aviation Minister, Fu'aad Ahmed Nuux, has informed media outlets that the regulations - initially declared in recent months - became operational on 10 November.

Officials declared airlines that do not comply will be told to divert, and claimed several aircraft had already been rerouted.

Aviation Authority Dispute

Footage released by Somaliland's aviation ministry reportedly displays regional aviation officials issuing instructions to global airline crews - an action hailed internally as a demonstration of northern self-governance.

But Mogadishu's air transport department asserts it retains complete jurisdictional power concerning the Mogadishu Flight Information Region (Flight Information Region), that includes all territorial skies. Authorities have instructed each flight to ignore all directives provided by sources besides central government.

Officials cautioned that not adhering to national and worldwide air transport standards could pose security threats and result in "significant legal repercussions".
