The Trump phenomenon's most telling and defining instances – not its most important, nor most brutal, nor most dangerous, nor stupidest, but possibly its most revealing – came earlier this autumn. Over the span of a few weeks, the American president began displaying all observers his intentions for a gilded ballroom twice the size than the White House and subsequently started unilaterally ripping down the eastern section to erect it.
He has performed deeds ten thousand times worse – the existing assessment of deaths due to his slashing to USAID stands at 600,000 and rising, and recently a study projected his energy policies would result in fatalities another 1.3 million. But nothing as definitional. No other president would have attempted – genuinely, no other president would have imagined – independently wrecking significant portions of the presidential residence to construct a Versailles-style party room, with the direct cooperation of some of the richest Americans, the majority of whom conduct transactions with the government.

As confusing as it is to observe the president seek to颠覆 the established notion of democracy and replace it with its complete opposite, there is one large group within America who wouldn't consider it entirely new. That is those of us – in older age cohorts a near majority – who were educated as conventional Protestant believers.
We have witnessed throughout the years as rightwing evangelical churches transformed the Christ we learned about into exactly the opposite of our perception of his character. Essentially, they transformed an image of love into an icon of animosity who blesses exactly the harshness that he denounced in biblical teachings; this transformation occurred at a slower pace, over decades as opposed to months, yet it remains unsettling through similar means, a confusing personal impact for many of us.
A Harmful Christianity Establishes Itself
So let me first describe the Christ from my childhood, because theoretically Jesus is the center of any Christian faith, and because the quickly increasing segment of Americans could have minimal awareness about him since they are atheists or agnostics or nones. I take no issue with any of these traditions, nor with any other faith; yet I maintain that exist valuable insights of substantial value in the Christian story.
It is unquestionably definitely not the account of an authoritative monarch emerging; rather, a child comes into the world to displaced parents in a garage, who are forced to hastily depart to another nation to escape secret police. The infant develops in simple surroundings, a laboring woodworker; his doctrine is about love for others, particularly for the disadvantaged – and not a sentimental love, but tangible care, demonstrated through nourishing and protecting. The obvious and direct truth that the Savior of the gospels calls for a kind of extreme compassion centered on the needy has perpetually caused Christianity somewhat of a scandalous religion: appealing to the populace, but due to its intrinsic extremism requiring to be controlled. In the fifties it was restrained by dilution – The Protestant faith was so dominant that it essentially blessed current circumstances.
A Struggle for the Finest Among Us
So I have been heartened to observe the determined opposition against Trump arise over the last twelve months. It has provided significant comfort to participate in developing the campaign that has taken to the streets through repeated demonstrations, and seems to have inspired voters to turn out in numbers in the off-year elections. We will need to persist with it, and through comparable resolve, displaying national flags during all protests and appeals to the highest qualities of American history.
