European Union Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been central to campaigns to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.

Other Developments Reported Today

In other legal developments:

  • A US district judge has halted attempts to cut security grants to states which resist certain immigration enforcement policies. The official stated the case was “a further instance” of linking federal aid to policy compliance.
  • Authorization was issued for the deployment of hundreds of national guard troops to a major US city ahead of the holiday period, alongside an active immigration enforcement operation.
  • A Pacific Island nation has agreed to take in dozens of individuals from the US in return for additional aid, following concluding a formal agreement with US authorities.

Furthermore, a congressional representative has filed a lawsuit seeking the stripping of the current president’s name from a well-known performing arts center in Washington DC.

Analysts have also noted that recent statements regarding Venezuelan oil align with a wider ideology in certain circles of “economic expansionism”, drawing comparisons with historical international strategies.
